Knee pain while climbing stairs?
Understand why it happens and when an assessment can help.
Stairs ask the knee to manage more load than level walking. Pain does not always mean damage is getting worse; it often means the current demand is greater than what the joint and surrounding muscles can comfortably handle.
Why stairs can feel difficult
- Reduced strength in the thigh, hip or calf muscles
- A rapid increase in walking, running or gym activity
- Joint stiffness after sitting or resting
- Irritation around the kneecap or other knee structures
What you can try
Use the handrail temporarily, slow down, and place your whole foot on the step. Keep general movement going within a tolerable range. Simple strengthening can help, but the right starting point depends on your symptoms and movement quality.
When an assessment is useful
Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, swelling is frequent, the knee gives way, or you are avoiding activities you value. The goal is to understand the load your knee can currently manage and build from there.
